How to Propagate Cryptomeria Bonsai

Understand that you are not going to produce instant bonsai from the Cryptomeria Japonica, Cryptomeria, or Japanese cedar. To grow bonsai from these species you must first grow seeds, layering', grafts, or purchase the plants from nurseries. To grow the bonsai however, you can train the Cryptomeria to shape in the form of the ancient Cryptomeria Japonica bonsai.

Once you grow the seeds, layering, or purchase the plants from nurseries, you will need to learn techniques to care for your plants. First, you want to propagate the plants. You can use seeds by gathering the seedlings and planting them immediately in sand, soil and peat mixture. You will need 1/3 loam, leaf mould, and course sand to complete your planting. Under glass is necessary to promote healthy bonsai growth, yet using different strategies will promote germination?

To graft the Cryptomeria group start in March and grow the plants in a greenhouse environment. If you plan to use layering to grow and train bonsai select the flexible and lowest branches. Once you select your branch, strip it, cut three incisions, and remove the needles. Soil the layering and with the tips left with needles leave this section erected from the soil. The plants grow in moist habitats and the pot must have renewed peat and sand to promote continued root growth.

Now you can move to care for your plants and begin training your bonsai. First, let me explain how the nature-based Japanese cedar forms. The Taxodiaceae family comes from native regions, China, Japan, etc, and the trees such as the Cryptomeria Japonica are the only member of the Tax group that includes multiple selections of cultivars. The Asian specimens can grow up to 200-feet, while the European species only grow up to 80-feet. The trees grow tapered outlines and an upright trunk. The trunk has a brick tone bark, which narrow strips peel from its foundation. The hardwood tapers and presents evergreen needles, which point. The brilliantly colored green-blue needles turn coffee, chocolate, or similar colors during the colder months. Cones grow from the trees, which are shapely, i.e. the spherical cones have scaly, spiky outlines.

Now you can care for your bonsai. The plants demand mild shade. The plant will not survive in direct sunbeams. The climatic desired level should be heated to the plants liking. Since the needles turn russet, shades during colder months you want to protect the tree from frostbite.

How to ventilate:

Cryptomeria specimens' demand humid, yet the plants also take delight in changing winds. Strong winds are obsolete however.

How to pot:
Cryptomeria demands cool and deep pots along with adequate drainage.

How to clean:

To clean your Cryptomeria keeps the plant in moist areas. Withered needles should be plucked from the soil and tree(s). You will need cutting tools to remove dead wood. The interior region of the tree should have a tidy environment at all times.

How to re-pot:
Growth is promoted when the plant is re-potted every few years. Preferably, re-pot the plants three to five years and re-potted during the spring.

How to prune:

You should prune the new growth by pinching out the shoots from the needles. The best time to prune is during spring and fall months. If you notice shoots growing at the chief branch or trunk, pinch them out. The foliage should also be pruned. When pruning the best solution is to use common sense. Some bonsai require debris to grow healthy, yet the Cryptomeria is not one of these plants.

NOTE: Beginners should propagate or germinate other specimens, especially if you lack knowledge and training in plant growth. This particular specimen is difficult to prune.
